Your road story starts here.
In 2018, I had the pleasure of working for the Special Areas Board, a rural municipality, from the middle of April until the end of August. The Special Areas covers a large portion of land surrounding Consort, Oyen, and Hanna, AB. I worked out of the Special Areas #4 office located in Consort, AB and was primarily involved with Travel Special Areas. On top of graphic design, social media, and photography, I also scheduled and operated a mobile visitor information tent within the Special Areas. With the amount of travel required and the number of varying tasks I had, staying organized and on top of projects was important, especially with tight deadlines.
My first design project was the mobile visitor centre (VIC) package, which consisted of a three-sided tent, two 6 foot banners, two feather flags, and a table cloth. The VIC offered not only information but also free wifi and a charging station. One banner was designed to show these services while the other banner started as a large detailed map of the area and points of interest, later simplified to a silhouette showing the location of the Special Areas in Alberta.
My favourite piece I designed for Travel Special Areas was this camping pamphlet. I was able to create a colourful pamphlet with illustrations that were both visually appealing as well as useful to tourists. This pamphlet stated out as a simple camping checklist and quickly became so much more. When designing the pamphlet, I took the initiative to add regional specific checklist items as well as tips for tourists who might not be familiar with regional areas. Tips included checking fire bans, a reminder of limited fuel option, a reminder to travel with a paper map, and making sure to stay hydrated.
I photographed local landmarks, events, and general images of the area. These images were used in office and as a way of promoting what the Special Areas have to offer. My photographs of landmarks and events were shared on Instagram and also utilized in my design work, such as the billboards.
I created a series of billboard designs for a double-sided billboard along the number 9 Highway just outside of Richdale, AB. The first set of billboard ads were to promote the historic churches in Dorothy, AB and the Prairie Elevator in Acadia Valley, AB.
I created a few ads for the mobile VIC that were shared via social media and printed in the local newspaper. Throughout the summer I also managed the Travel Special Areas Instagram account. I would share upcoming local events, photos, and the locations of the mobile VIC.
I created a few posters for local events as well as the local daycare but the largest event I dealt with was Taste of Consort. For Taste of Consort, I created not only the event poster but menus, signage, and thank you cards. The event fell on the Canada Day long weekend which is reflected in the colour theme. A menu theme was used throughout the posters and some of the signage.
